The Qawwalis You Must Listen To...

Qawwali is a vibrant musical tradition that stretches back more than 700 years. Originally performed mainly at Sufi shrines throughout what is now India and Pakistan. I have been listening to many Qawwalis of late. Thats why I decided list the top ten qawwalis of Hindi films, from the small number of songs I've heard. Film songs are only considered here as , if I don't do that then the top 10 will belong to one single person.. Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan..the king of Qawwalis..

Here comes the list( My Favorites ) ..

1. Hamein To Loot Liya - Ismail Azad Qawwal - Al Hilal
2. Parda Hai Parda - Mohd Rafi - Amar Akbar Anthony
3. Hai Agar Dushman Zamana - Mohd Rafi, Asha bhosle - Hum Kisi Se Kam Nahin
4. Der Na Ho Jaye Kahin - Lata Mangeshkar - Henna
5. Aaj Kyon Humse Parda Hai - Mohd Rafi - Sadhna
6. Teri mehfil main kismat azma Ke - Lata Mangeshkar, Shamshad Begum - Mughal-e-Azam
7. Pal Do Pal Ka Saath Hamara - Mohd Rafi, Asha bhosle - The Burning Train
8. Zindagi Maut Na Ban Jaye - Sonu Nigam, Roop Kumar Rathod - Sarfarosh
9. Jhoom Barabar Jhoom Sharabi - Aziz Nazan - 5 Rifles
10. Yaari Hai Iman Mera - Manna dey - Zanjeer

Its really an injustice to mention the top 10 only. There are many other good ones. I must say they are equally good. The top 10 is actually my favorite 10. Needn't be the best 10 Qawwalis of all time.

List continues..
11. Sharma Ke Yeh Kyon Sab Pardanashin - Asha Bhosle & Shamshad Begum - Chaudhvin Ka Chand
12. Na To Carvan Ki Talash Hai - Mohd. Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle & Sudha Malhotrre - Barsat Ki Raat
13. Chandi Ka Badan - Mohd. Rafi, Manna Dey, Asha Bhosle - Taj Mahal
14. Aae meri Zohra zabeen - Manna Dey - Waqt

This list is not complete . I am looking forward to add some more soon. Hoping to hear something new each day. But the saddest thing is that, there are not many qawwalis in the new generation Hindi films..
Piya Haji Ali from Fiza, Tumse Milke dil ka hai jo haal from Main hoon na and Ali Ali from Deewar are the only exceptions.

Closing Notes:

Gar khuda mujse kahe . . . Gar khuda mujse kahe
Kuchh maang eh bande mere
Me ye maangu . .
Me ye maangu . .
Mehefilo ke daur yu chalte rahe
Ham pe aalao, ham nibaah laao
Hamsafar, hamraaz ho
Ta qayaamat. . .
Ta qayaamat. . .
Jo chiraago ki tarha jalte rahe

Sushmita Sen on Mohanlal

The Malayalam maverick Mohanlal has a new fan. The Bollywood diva, Sushmita Sen is elated about sharing screen space with him.“I’ve stood in the same frame as Mohanlal.I’m honoured. To watch him perform is to watch a whole textbook on Indian cinema unfold in front of your eyes. He’s THAT brilliant.”

Celebrating 100 Years of Scouting

2007 marks the Centenary of World Scouting. The first Scout Camp opened on the 1st August, 1907 by the Movement's Founder Robert Baden-Powell. Prince William has opened the 21st World Scout Jamboree on 27Th of July, marking the 100Th anniversary of the movement's founding. 40,000+ young people from around the world, will be celebrating the Scouting Sunrise in one place. The motto for the Centenary is One World One Promise.
During my school days, I used to be a boy scout. We all were very proud to be part of the scout group. The scout prayer was the first Hindi song I learned in full. It is really a nice one. Later i went on to study the Flag song too. I remember the camps I attended. Me n my friends always enjoyed those camps. Our favourite part was always the camp-fire. I must say I learned lot of things from those camps. I remember the first thing they wanted me to study after joining the scout group. Its a must for all.. Take a note. The motto is.. Be Prepared..

The Bharat Scout Prayer Song:

Daya Kar Dan Bhakti Ka

Hamen Paramatma Dena

Daya Karna Hamari Atma

Main Shudhata Dena

Hamere Dhyan Main Aao

Prabhu Ankon Main Bas Jao

Andhere Dil Main Aa Kar Ke

Param Jyoti Jaga Dena

Bahado Prem Ki Ganga

Dilon Main Prem Ka Sagar

Hamen Aapas Main Miljulkar

Prabhu Rehna Sikha Dena

Hamara Karam Ho Seva

Hamara Dharam Ho Seva

Sada Iman Ho Seva

Wo Sevakchar Bana Dena

Vatan Kr Vaste Jeena

Vatan Ke Vaste Marna

Vatan Par Jan Fida Karna

Prabhu Humko Sikha Dena”

Mohanlal to Start Multiplex at Chalakudy...

Excerpts from the news in Hindu, July 28th

Mohanlal bringing multiplexes to Kerala..

Actor Mohanlal is building state-of-the-art cinemas in Kerala. " These cinemas would be like multiplexes",he told Hindu here. "The first two cinemas will be at Pathanamthitta and Chalakudy."

"The cinemas will have two screens," Mohanlal said," One will have a seating capacity of 600 and the other 400. And one can do more than just watch a film here. You can shop and go to restaurants. There could be a place for children to play. The cinemas my business partners and I are building will have all such facilities."

He said more such cinemas would be built later. "May be not in the major cities where land value is prohibitive," said the actor.

...Life is...

Everything is just so cluttered with emotions. I can't say my life is one way for the next day will be completely different. I feel clouded by the horrid depths of confusion. Nothing in this world makes sense anymore but isn't that what makes it worth experiencing? At times my thoughts can get a bit carried away. I tend to take things for granted must learn to appreciate what I have been given. If my family were a forest fire, I'd be the ashes that remained. Just the old nasty ashes that were left behind reminding all of the disaster that took place. If my friends and I were colorful flowers, I'd be the first to wilt. Is it because I'm not strong enough? Maybe I just like darker colors over the bright. If I was born in a litter of cats, I'd be the little runt the mother rejects. It is unfair to think this Kat would be treated so I have so much here for me, but I feel differently. I am surrounded by those who think the world of me. But why does it feel like I'm not worth it? Sometimes I just wish. I just wish...But you, no. You're different. Why do you treat me so? Why do you torment me so? You are never out of my mind. Not even for the fluttering seconds of today and you somehow manage to come back tomorrow. It's the past that has left me scarred. I used to be so happy but, remember that things change with every day. What is happening in my present? I don't really know Is what I am feeling now, happiness?Confusion seems to have weaved itself inside me. I feel it has wrapped around my veins, nerves, and bones eat, breathe, and sleep confusion. And I hate it.I'm afraid to think today is any better But being pessimistic never did me any good I wish I could be satisfied with what I have.

Remakes Rule..

Remakes are all set to rule the movie industry.. Interestingly two of the biggest hits of Mohanlal in Malayalam are all set to release in Tamil. I watched the trailers of both films. That was what made me write this post.

Remakes are not something new in film industry. Particularly Tamil film industry have always been influenced by other language films. So often they remade hit film from Hindi and other southern languages..
All together there are about 6 films of mohanlal whose remakes in tamil are in pipeline..
They are
1. Kireedom remade into Kireedam, starring Ajith
2. Spadikam remade into Veerappu, starring Sunder C
3. Udayananu Tharam remade into Vellai Thirai, starring Prithivraj
4. Chotta Mumbai remake, starring Vijay
5. Vadakkum Nathan remake, starring Vikram
6. Hallo

The biggest star of Tollywood Rajnikanth himself saved his career with the remake of Amitabh's Don , 'Billa'.. He went on to remake Amitabh hits such as Khud-Daar, Namak Halaal, Lawaaris, Trishul, and Kasme Vaade, were remade into hit Rajinikanth starrers Padikkadavan, Velaikaran, Panakkaran, Mr. Bharath, and Dharmathin Thalaivan, respectively. He also remade Mohanlal's Thenmavin Kombathu and Manichitrathazhu( from Kannada version), to 'Muthu' and 'Chandramukhi'.. The number two in Kollywood, Vijay has an uncanny knack for spotting a winner in remakes. The 'Ilaya Dalapathi' saw tremendous potential in a Telugu film titled Pokkiri , directed by Prabhudeva... Promptly, he remade it in Tamil, with spectacular results. Buoyed by the success of the remake recipe, Vijay has set his sights on another hit film, the Mohanlal starrer, ‘Chota Mumbai’, a big hit in Mollywood. The grapevine is abuzz that Vijay is planning to remake it in Tamil with himself in the male lead. His Thullatha manavum thullum, Kadhalukku Mariyadhai, friends etc were remakes only..Vikram's kashi, majja etc were also remakes of malayalam films.. When Kamal Hasan remade 'Munnabhai MBBS', the innocent charm associated with the original was never there. It was a total disaster to me.

I have often noticed that the tamil remakes tend to fail the originals in more than one way.. The remakes of Bharatham and Nadodikattu etc were really an insult to the original.
Its really funny that even though Mohanlal confines himself mostly to malayalam industry, most of his hit films are reamde into many other languages, thanks to his close friend Priyadarshan who is making Bhool Bhulaiya with Akshay Kumar which is a remake of Mohanlal's 'Manichitrathazhu'. Priyadarshan in the past have remade many of the malayalam and tamil hits into hindi. Virasaat and Hera Pheri are some of his best remakes.. I dont think he have done anything other than remake films in hindi. Maalamal weekly may be an exception. Earlier he used to remake Hollywood movies to malayalam. Anyway its heartwarming to see he havent forgotten his oldways.

Mohanlal mayn't be complaining, he himself is acting on another great remake. The potboiler of the season is RGV's Sholay aka Aaag. In this remake of Ramesh Sippy's timeless classic 'Sholay' he portrays the role of Thakur, enacted in the original by legendary Sanjeev kumar. RGV is not someone who is stranger to remakes. He himself remade his debut film shiva in hindi. Also he went on to remake Godfather into hindi as Sarkar. Now he is planning a sequel, which is named Sarkar Raj.

Interview: Mohanlal On His Role In RGV's Aag

The trend seems to be never ending.. Why filmmakers go for a remake?.. When directors aren't confident of doing something different?.. or when the producer dont like to take a risk?.. sometimes leading actors are the ones who want the remakes. Remakes are noway a crime.. But one feel they should do justice to the original story. The writers rights should also be protected. I always felt bad for someone like Madhu Muttom for the treatment he got. Even when he is the original author of 'Chandramukhi' which collected crores, he is still a struggling writer.

Only one thing is still baffling to me, why there is no remakes in malayalam.. Last time i saw a remake in malayalam was Priyadarshan's Vettom.. and also When Kamal remade Tom cruise's Rainman into Pacha kuthira.. Ohh.. i forgot one more name.. Amal Neerad's Mammootty starrer Big B( 'Yogi' is the name of the film's Tamil remake) was the remake of Four Brothers, which itself was an adaptation of the film The Sons of Katie Elder... Priyadarshan , you got competition..
